During the Covid-19 pandemic, we have had to rethink our approach to music making. Singing has the potential to be a super-spreader of the disease and so we have halted all group singing for the safety of our congregation. During this time we have developed a virtual choir which provides three hymns and a canticle each week. Our livestream services offer live organ music, the virtual choir, and a cantor providing some live music done at safe distances within the church.
The Atonement choir provides musical leadership on Sundays through the singing of hymns, canticles, psalms, and anthems. The choir is a volunteer group of singers and is open to anyone who is interested, ages 12 and up. There are no auditions and no previous musical experience is necessary.
The Choral Scholars are four Westfield State University music students who receive a stipend in exchange for their voices on Sunday mornings. These students are training to become music educators, composers, conductors, or professional singers. We provide them with professional singing experience while teaching them about liturgy, sacred music, scripture, and faith formation. During the pandemic, we will have solos from scholars and former scholars.
The Atonement handbell choir is a low-stakes opportunity for any person to participate in group music-making. We have three octaves of Malmark handbells and offer a wide variety of music for services. The group offers music once each month with extra offerings during the summer months. Anybody is welcome to join the group and it is a great option for those who want to make music but have never done it before. Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00.
